Australia and New Zealand Cruise– Day 1-2

Day 1

Well despite being on the ship I still can’t get my head around the fact that we will be on this floating city for the next 40 days. It doesn’t help that we spent the first night in the port in Seattle, due to high winds along the coast. Peter was disappointed as he loves nothing more than being out on the open seas and a good story. We were relieved to see a little boy around G&H’s age in the check out lane with us. On top of that he had an Angry Birds Space shirt on so the boys somehow deemed him already cool and one of their kind.

About a millisecond after we got checked through we were immediately recognized from a couple from Cruise Critic website where Peter had made few posts about our concerns with bringing the boys (including homeschooling and missing Halloween, lack of volume control, etc). Several people are on this ship that know there is a little boy Grant who is 8 and a little boy Henry who is 6. So much for any sort of anonymity. I hope these Grandparents can remember kids of their own and that not every day is a perfect behavior day.

Homeschool has been a challenge. Despite having far fewer hours doing school work he keeps pushing every minute on when his “off” days will happen. Never one to miss an opportunity to be the model A++++ student/child when Grant is being a challenge, Henry is tearing through his homework like Nerds Gone Wild. He’s finished 3 weeks worth in the first 2 mornings. We’re trying to figure out the best way to get this done daily.

After setting sail last night the Captain announced that while we were going to be leaving we needed to be mindful of the severity of the ship rocking. Ladies advised against high heels (woohoooo!) and all the deck chairs would be tied down along with outdoor doors being locked. They have drained the pool (so there goes our plan for homeschool while one child swims). I took a motion sickness pill last night but haven’t really needed one today.

Day 2

Still more struggles with homeschooling. I suspect this will continue until Grant figures out it has to happen no matter how much he whines.

During lunch today the Captain announced our new schedule that would enable us to make up the lost day we spent in Seattle. We will be heading into Maui (instead of Hilo) and will be spending ONE day in Honolulu instead of the preplanned 2.

Grant decided he liked calamari but looked horrified when we told him it was squid.. and then decided he liked it enough to order his own order.

First opportunity I’ve had to get my Uke out and play though Peter needed to do one last piece of work so I’m a bit self-conscious about strumming and singing in the enclosed Lido with loads of people around.

Henry has been suffering with a cold – looks like it just turned into an ear infection – Off to see the ships doctor right now. Looks like he’ll need antibiotics.DSC02677DSC02681DSC02682DSC02690
