Australia and New Zealand Cruise - Wellington

Welllll Wellington. It would be hard to compete with the gorgeous weather of Akaroa yesterday so it appeared that Wellington didn’t bother to show up for the fight. Rainy and cold all day. I kept thinking “I can’t believe I got sunburnt yesterday!!”. Having said that, we are from the Seattle area.. we laugh in the face of rain.. at least until we’re totally fed up with it.

We headed off early (of course) this morning and went into the town center and got a cable car up to the top of the hill where they had a nice little museum about cable car history with some older restored cable cars and the winding room. While walking around the museum we were looking at some models and early pictures and reading the placards and Grant said “Actually mom, there are some pretty cool things that are old”. This got a chuckle out of the older couple standing next to us. Honestly, in a day of iPads and crazy all the time media pushing every new electronic from the time babies can open their eyes, I thought it was at least cool he recognized that there have always been cool things and maybe have a tiny bit of respect for history and how things have evolved. I don’t attribute this statement alone to this, but Grant really does enjoy history and museums.

After the museum we wandered out to the lookout point where a guide told us there was a great kid’s playground about 5 minutes down the path that had a flying fox (zipline). Just a suggestion for any future tour guides – maybe don’t dangle the carrot RIGHT in front of the kids so we don’t have to be the jerks that say no. But in the end it WAS only 5 minutes away so no real harm. Until we were at the playground for 10 minutes and it started pouring torrential rain. There was a tiny shelter near the bathrooms that we stayed in for about 15 minutes until we realized there was no chance of it clearing up and then we made the trek back to the cable car and back into town. By then the kids were SOAKED and hungry so we just stopped in a couple of shops and headed back to the ship hoping to head back when it cleared a little. It only got worse.

Oh. Some excitement as soon as we boarded the ship again – I looked down and Henry wasn’t wearing his backpack – which also contained his nook tablet. When Peter is along with me, I sort of assume a conquer and divide tactic will take care of things. So when Grant was with me in the bus I gathered my stuff, told Grant to get his backpack, checked the seat and general area to make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything.. and then we exited the bus in an orderly fashion. I would assume that Peter (seated with Henry) would do the same thing. Obviously, not the case. So I didn’t feel the least bit bad about making Peter RUN back into the rain, back down the gangway, back through the terminal and track down our bus to see if it had taken off. Fortunately, it was still sitting there on its own in the back of the bus where Peter failed to check.
